CHAPTER TWELVE
SPRING, SAGINAW, MICHIGAN, 1959
Solomon continued his academic brilliance in his freshman year at a local college. In his sophomore year, in the spring of 1959, Solomon met a young woman named Sunshine Murray. She was a junior, socially and politically minded, and extremely strong-willed. She had a perfectly trimmed bouffant hairstyle. Her skin was yellow, and without blemish. She wore no makeup of any kind. She was the most naturally beautiful woman Solomon had ever laid eyes on. Her shoulders were square, and her arms were slim. Her curvaceous hips poked out of the sides of her long plaid skirt. And her shapely legs peeked from the bottom of her skirt, and the top of her white socks. Solomon stood high above the top of her head, but she was the one who stood as the intimidator.
Sunshine was strictly about her studies. Romance was an unwanted nuisance that could only distract her from her career. Solomon was an academic scholar, and a lady’s man. Sunshine was a woman who put her academics before anything else. He had never dated a black woman in his life, and he assumed that because he finally desired a black woman, the feelings would be reciprocated.
One afternoon he saw Sunshine sitting on a bench reading a book. Solomon felt that there was no better time than the present to begin his assault.
“How are you today, Miss?” Solomon asked.
Sunshine looked up at him, then looked back down at her book without acknowledging him.
“Excuse me, Miss, how are you today?” Solomon asked again.
Sunshine looked up at him again and spoke, “I was doing quite well until a minute ago.”
“My name is Solomon Chambers. What’s yours?” he asked, reaching out his hand for Sunshine to shake.
Sunshine looked at his hand, and dropped her eyes back down.
“Miss, I’m not trying to take up a lot of your time. I just wanna talk to you for three hundred seconds.”
Sunshine laid her book to the side. “Why didn’t you just say five minutes?”
“Because three hundred seconds sound like a lot more time than five minutes, doesn’t it?” Solomon laughed.
Sunshine picked up her book and started reading it, ignoring Solomon again.
“Seriously,” Solomon said, clearing his throat from embarrassment. “I have seen you around campus, and I wasn’t going to say anything but I’m here. I turned to walk away, but I couldn’t. I swear it felt like I was having a stroke. I couldn’t breathe; I felt slightly dizzy. I had to say something to you or I would have passed out from anxiety.”
“That’s a pretty good line; is it an original?”
“Miss, before I go any further, can you please tell me your name?”
“That’s OK; Miss is fine.”
“I guess we’re experiencing a little Indian summer, because it’s extremely hot out here today. Especially on this bench.”
“Believe me, it can get hotter, so go find yourself a nice cool spot somewhere else. Bye-bye!”
“Why are you so cold to me, and you don’t even know me?”
“I know you, and I know your game.”
Sunshine started to walk away, but Solomon grabbed her by the arm and stopped her.
